Vegan Practically

Something to chew on (doesn’t taste like cardboard)

Excellent plant-based chocolate!

I know I’ve mostly been doing fun posts lately but I do have something in the works on the idea of moral demandingness. Coming next week. For today, let’s talk about chocolate.

I absolutely love chocolate, whether in cakes or cookies or just plain bars. Lots of people think that it’ll be hard to find good chocolate if you’re vegan. At the very least they think you’re in trouble if you were a milk chocolate lover. Personally I like dark chocolate and a good amount of it is either intentionally or accidentally plant-based. So that is lucky for me. But some people don’t love it. They find it bitter and think it just doesn’t satisfy the way milk chocolate does.

I recently came across a delicious line of chocolate bars from the German chocolate company Ritter Sport that are vegan and creamy like milk chocolate. I bought a salted caramel one last weekend and savoured it, eating a couple of squares each day after lunch for six days. It was delicious and smooth, with just enough crunch from the salted caramel to make it interesting.

Not all the Ritter Sport chocolate bars are vegan but they have four different flavours in their vegan line (roasted peanuts, crunch almonds, smooth chocolate, and salted caramel). Each is clearly marked as vegan on the package, so just make sure you check before you buy.

I can vouch for the salted caramel. I’m going to go get another this weekend. They’re not exactly cheap. But they’re not outrageous either. I paid $5.99 Canadian for mine and I got a lot of joy for six days in a row. To me a dollar a day seems a reasonable price to pay for a little treat.

When my friends were all posting about breaking into the Halloween candy, I wasn’t feeling any FOMO because I had my chocolate bar.

If you haven’t inferred it already, I highly recommend this brand of vegan chocolate.

Bon appétit!

Along the same lines, cadbury’s now make a vegan milk chocolate bar. (Possibly other milk choc things?) Milk chocolate loving vegans tell me it tastes exactly like the non-vegan.

I’ll have to check them out. I’m more of a dark chocolate fan but I will try it for the sake of the blog. The sacrifices, the sacrifices! Thanks for the recommendation!

Yeah, I prefer dark, too, which is why I haven’t tried it! But to each their (vegan) own, right?

It’s just amazing that we have choices nowadays.

I don’t know what’s available in Canada but there are actually loads of vegan mylk chocolates now. My favourites are Vego, Jeavons and Doisy & Dam but if you check out the Food Empowerment Project’s ethical chocolate list you will find a huge list of choices which are not only vegan, but are also completely ethical (ie no child labour/slavery involved in the cocoa production): https://foodispower.org/chocolate-list/ 😀

Thanks once again for clueing in the rest of us to easy-peasy ways to incorporate more vegan foods into our diets. I am not a serious chocolate lover, but it’s nice to know that Ritter Sport makes some vegan types, which I will check out. Salted caramel is one of my favorite choc bars, so I’m looking forward to that one…

I actually didn’t know that Ritter Sport were vegan. Vegan chocolate has come a long way though, now a lot is just like milk chocolate. It’s easier than ever to find good vegan chocolate which is obviously a good thing.

They have a plant-based line. Not all the Ritter Sport chocolate bars are vegan. The ones that are are clearly labelled and easy to distinguish from those that aren’t. Enjoy!
